NERC Convenes Meeting On Eligible Customer Regulations 2024

On Tuesday, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) held a meeting of stakeholders in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) on the Eligible Customer Regulations (ERC) 2024.
Chairing the meeting, the NERC Vice Chairman, Dr. Musiliu Oseni, stated that the conference's objective was to provide updates on the regulations to the NESI operators.
The objective of the Regulations is to effect the provisions of the Electricity Act (EA) as amended to provide standard rules that will facilitate competition in electricity supply, improve the quality of supply, and encourage third-party access to transmission and distribution infrastructure to stimulate retail electricity market competition.
The regulation is to also allow licensed Generation Companies (GenCos) with uncontracted capacity access to unserved and underserved customers to improve the financial liquidity of the electricity industry.
At the meeting, stakeholders got clarifications about the registration process at NERC stipulation that customers who utilize power of six megawatts (MW) threshold can be eligible for the status.
Upon getting an Eligible Customer (EC) status, these large users of power can contract to buy electricity from power GenCos.
