Zanzibar Utilities Regulatory Authority Concludes Electricity Study Tour in Nigeria
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has concluded a study tour for a delegation from the Zanzibar Utilities Regulatory Authority (ZURA), aimed at strengthening regulatory collaboration and promoting knowledge exchange in electricity sector regulation.
The study tour, which ended on Tuesday, 28 July 2026, provided the ZURA delegation with first-hand insights into Nigeria's evolving electricity market, regulatory framework, and institutional arrangements.
NERC Vice Chairman, Dr. Yusuf Ali, underscored the importance of sustained collaboration between both regulatory agencies, reaffirming the Commission's commitment to continuous knowledge sharing through an established cooperation framework.
As part of the programme, NERC facilitated engagements with key stakeholders across the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI), including a courtesy visit to the Honourable Minister of Power, Mr. Joseph Tegbe.
The delegation also visited the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), and held technical sessions with officials across the electricity sector.
Key areas of knowledge exchange included:
* Nigeria's electricity market structure and regulatory framework;
* The development of the renewable energy subsector;
* The operation of the grid-interconnected rooftop solar mini-grid at Wuse Market, Abuja, with a view to replicating the model in Zanzibar; and
* Grid Code enforcement and the operational management of Nigeria's national grid.
The study tour reflects NERC's continued commitment to supporting capacity development and fostering regional cooperation among electricity regulators across Africa.
