NERC Receives REA, Sierra Leone Delegation on Knowledge Exchange Visit
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) today received a delegation from the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and officials from the Ministry of Energy of Sierra Leone on a courtesy visit to the Commission.
The Sierra Leonean delegation is in Nigeria under the REA Country-to-Country Knowledge Exchange Programme, aimed at strengthening institutional collaboration and sharing best practices in rural electrification and electricity sector regulation.
Welcoming the delegation, NERC Chairman, Dr. Musiliu Oseni, reaffirmed the Commission's commitment to promoting knowledge exchange and regional cooperation in electricity regulation. He noted that NERC's mandate, as provided under the Electricity Act 2023, is to regulate the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) through the development and enforcement of regulatory frameworks that promote reliable, affordable and sustainable electricity services.
NERC Commissioner for Stakeholder Management, Mrs. Aisha Mahmud, welcomed the delegation and highlighted the progress recorded in the sector, including the growth of Nigeria's installed electricity generation capacity to over 14,000 megawatts.
Mrs. Mahmud also underscored NERC's efforts to accelerate renewable energy deployment through its updated Mini Grid Regulations 2026, which provides a viable model that Sierra Leone can leverage.
Leader of the Sierra Leonean delegation and Deputy Minister of Energy II, Dr. Abdul Rahim Jalloh, stated that Sierra Leone was eager to learn from Nigeria's experience in electricity sector reforms, particularly in rural electrification, regulatory development and the utilisation of renewable energy solutions.
Technical session highlights include: · Presentation on the Overview of NERC and NESI. · A discussion on the journey towards implementing NERC Mini Grid Regulations 2026.
