NERC Holds Workshop for Electricity Reporters
On Monday in Kano, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) officially kicked off a 3-Day capacity strengthening workshop for electricity reporters (July 6–8, 2026).
In her opening remarks, NERC Commissioner, Stakeholder Management Division, Hajiya Aisha Mahmud welcomed participants to Kano and emphasized that the media is an essential partner in the development of the power sector. She urged journalists to challenge the Commission, ask tough questions, and hold all industry stakeholders accountable.
The workshop aims to elevate energy reporting and deepen the media’s understanding of the rapidly evolving Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI). Across the three days, collaborative sessions will explore:
Market Transition: Navigating the shift from a centralized to a subnational electricity market.
Consumer Rights: Deep-diving into the Consumer Protection Regulations (CPR) to help journalists advocate for the public.
Data-Driven Journalism: Unpacking NESI operational data, statutory reports, and performance trends.
Industry Challenges: Brainstorming regulator-media partnerships to tackle issues like electricity vandalism.
The press remains a vital partner in the Commission’s mission to ensure an efficient power sector and robust consumer protection.
