NERC Holds Third NESI Meeting in 2025

In the first week of September, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) hosted the 3rd NESI Stakeholders Meeting of 2025 in Lagos.

It brought together State Electricity Regulatory Commissions/Bureaus (SERCs/SERBs) and key industry players to deliberate on critical sector reforms.

The discussions focused on: Asset and Liabilities Delineation, Capping of Estimated Billing, Handover of Electricity Market to State Regulators, Customer Band Migration,

There was also a roundtable with SERCs/SERBs on challenges in metering, account setup, and SubCo governance structures, alongside calls for a Forum of Regulators to drive ongoing collaboration and strengthen state electricity regulation.

On the second day, the stakeholders discussed strategies to strengthen operations, market performance, sector reforms, and implications of the new tax law, among others.

In wrapping up, NERC Vice Chairman, Dr. Musiliu Oseni, urged DisCos to strengthen their relationships with State Regulators, underscoring the need for open communication, transparency, accountability, and mutual respect.

“DisCos must do better with State Regulators — first impressions last. Be open about your challenges so they can work with you. Above all, treat state regulators with the respect they deserve,” said Dr. Oseni.

He also noted that it was a timely reminder that collaboration is essential to building a fair, resilient, and sustainable electricity market for Nigeria.

The quarterly meeting continues to serve as a vital platform for collaboration, alignment, and progress in shaping the future of Nigeria’s electricity supply industry.
