House of Representatives’ Committee on Power Conducts Oversight Visit to NERC

The House of Representatives Committee on Power conducted an oversight visit to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) on Monday, aimed at assessing the regulatory body's activities and the overall state of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).
During the visit, the Committee, led by its Chairman, Hon. Victor Nwokolo, engaged in comprehensive discussions with the Commission. The meeting focused on key issues affecting the NESI, including regulatory challenges, tariff adjustments, consumer protection, and the progress of ongoing reforms.
Hon. Nwokolo emphasized the importance of the oversight visit, stating, "Our goal is to ensure that NERC is effectively carrying out its mandate to regulate and improve the power sector. We are committed to identifying areas where we can provide legislative support to enhance the efficiency and reliability of electricity supply in Nigeria."
The NERC Chairman provided an overview of NERC's recent initiatives and achievements, highlighting efforts to enhance regulatory frameworks, promote renewable energy integration, and address consumer complaints. He also discussed the commission's ongoing collaboration with other stakeholders to tackle issues such as electricity theft, metering gaps, and infrastructure development.
The Committee members commended NERC for its efforts but also raised concerns about the persistent challenges facing the sector. They called for greater transparency in the tariff-setting process and urged NERC to prioritize the welfare of consumers while ensuring a fair and competitive market for electricity providers.
