House Committee on Safety Standards and Regulations Conducts Oversight Visit to NERC
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) led by the Chairman, Sanusi Garba, has received members of the House of Representatives Committee on Safety Standards and Regulations on an oversight visit.
Chairman of the Committee, Hon. David Idris Zacharias who led the members on the visit to NERC on Monday highlighted the crucial role of the Commission in the regulation of the power sector as he further noted the imperatives of global best safety practices.
Hon. Idris who said the inspection visit was to further promote the culture of safety in Nigeria stated the importance of having a Health Safety and Environment (HSE) department or unit to handle safety matters, especially for staff.
NERC Chairman re-emphasized the Commission’s commitment to the highest level of safety by ensuring standard operating procedures, fire drills, crucial certifications and strictly complying with all known HSE checklists.
The Committee, along with safety professionals from paramilitary agencies went round the NERC building to assess HSE measures that have been implemented by NERC.
The leadership of the Committee noted that a formal report would be prepared and communicated with NERC as soon as possible while urging the Commission to sustain its HSE practice.
