Energy Security: ONSA Engages Power Sector Stakeholders on Infrastructure Protection Strategies

The Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) has convened a strategic meeting with key stakeholders in Nigeria’s power sector to address growing concerns around energy infrastructure security.

Hosted at the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) headquarters at the instance of ONSA, the session was opened by NERC Commissioner for Legal, Licensing, and Compliance, Mr. Dafe Akpeneye, who urged participants to develop actionable strategies to combat vandalism of critical national assets and mitigate sabotage risks, including those arising from labour-related disruptions to the grid.

According to AVM Enebong Effiom, Director of Critical National Assets and Infrastructure Protection (DCNAIP) at ONSA, the meeting aimed to establish a new framework for safeguarding electricity infrastructure nationwide.

Participants—including representatives from Generation Companies (GenCos), the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Distribution Companies (DisCos), and other sector agencies—outlined key security challenges and proposed targeted action plans to address vulnerabilities.

AVM Effiom also noted that ONSA will continue its engagement with operators at a closer level, with GenCos and DisCos next in line for focused consultations, following earlier engagements with TCN, NERC, and the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO).
