NERC Holds A 3 Day Sensitization on Health and Safety in work places - urges conscious application

10.12.13 - 26

The Chairman, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) Dr. Sam Amadi, has urged for safety consciousness in the work place. He made the call during the opening of a three-day sensitization workshop on Health and Safety. The workshop was organized in collaboration with the Nigerian Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

He said that conscious attitudes should be imbibed by everyone. ‘’ I want to urge everybody to be extra-conscious, we are organizing this workshop in order to create consciousness in its entirety’’ Amadi said.

He said that the Commission’s policy on safety is to be strictly followed. According to him, it will be inappropriate for the regulator to be found wanting in health and safety internally.  ‘’We are to be 100% health and safety compliant’’ he reiterated.

The Health and Safety Environment policy statement of the Commission entails the provision of adequate controls and mitigation of risks arising from work activities, to consult employees and employers of Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry, to maintain safety of working tools within the Commission.

The policy is also to ensure safe handling of hazardous materials within the Commission, to provide adequate training for the Commission staff and to prevent accident cases amongst others.

Deputy General Manager in the Engineering Division of NERC- Engr. Abdul Bello Mohammed disclosed that risk assessment of the Health and Safety Environment will be undertaken on quarterly basis.
The highlight of the workshop was the pre-evaluation inspection of the Commission’s head office in Adamawa Plaza, Abuja.

Activities outlined for the workshop include emergency evacuation drill, lectures on fire safety, bomb and terrorisms threats and basic first aid and burns tips, among others.
